Autonomy of the Mind

West coast villain livin' in a sunny place full of shady people. A walking contradiction. If somewhere along the lines I were to be misjudged and I were to blame someone, it would be me for not being articulate myself properly.

FP: Pro-life, pro-lies

"During the procedure, the doctor removes the uterus via C-section and makes a small incision to operate on the baby. As Dr. Bruner completed the surgery on Samuel, the little guy reached his tiny, but fully developed hand through the incision and firmly grasped the surgeon’s finger. Dr. Bruner was reported as saying that when his finger was grasped, it was the most emotional moment of his life, and that for an instant during the procedure he was just frozen, totally immobile."

To read the rest of the compelling story that accompanies the photo, here is the article.

The entire text that comes with the picture tells of how a 21-week old fetus needed to be removed via C-section because the fetus was diagnosed with spina bifida. Joseph Bruner of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville operates when all of a sudden, his finger was being grasped by the living fetus and the photographer, Micheal Clancy snapped at just the right moment.

The story has been circulated and has since gone viral on the internet since 1999- early 2000's, largely publicized through e-mail. The origin of the article is said to be from Clancy, the photographer. However, the accuracy of the story is up for debate.

Reading in between the lines, all I've gotten from the article is the bittersweet stench of pure bullshit, conjured up by a manipulative pro-lifer that doesn't know when to cut the crap. Clearly, during the surgery, the mother would have been put under anesthesia, and once the mother is out, so is the fetus. Therefore, that makes it literally impossible for them to move, that is the basics of how anesthesia works. But you don't have to take my word for it.

“It has become an urban legend,” says Bruner, the Vanderbilt University surgeon who fixed the spina bifida lesion on Samuel. Some opponents of abortion have claimed that the baby reached through the womb and grabbed the doctor’s hand. Not true, Bruner says. Samuel and his mother, Julie, were under anesthesia and could not move. “The baby did not reach out,” Bruner says. “The baby was anesthetized. The baby was not aware of what was going on.”

What length will pro-lifers go to deceit and lure in the general public to sympathize with the emotional manipulation? Both mother and fetus were paralyzed and unaware during the operation, obviously the doctor was putting it back when it came out during the procedure. Remember when about six months ago, GOP tried to go after federal funding for NPR and Planned Parenthood, well they are trying to do it again. What I find most repulsive is that in a crowd of republicans, they instantly cheer over 234 executions, yet slut-shame anyone that tries to get an abortion.
