Autonomy of the Mind

West coast villain livin' in a sunny place full of shady people. A walking contradiction. If somewhere along the lines I were to be misjudged and I were to blame someone, it would be me for not being articulate myself properly.

In retrospect

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, everywhere you looked, the hype was "bring down the man", or "peace signs". Although those days are just another forgotten phase of history, it was a time of change. In the era of the "hipi's", neon posters and colorful lava lamps filled each teenage bed room. According to wiki, The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the mid-1960s, swiftly spreading to other countries around the world. The etymology of the term 'hippie' is from hipster, and was initially used to describe beatniks New York City's Greenwich Village and San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. These people inherited the countercultural values of the Beat Generation, created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and used drugs such as marijuana and LSD to explore alternative states of consciousness. They are now commonly refered to as guys who had long hair and wore tie dyed shirts, but back then, being a "Hipi" meant everything from respecting nature to freedom of expression. If you were a hipi, there would be a lot of pride attached to it. However, if you were not, you were sick a tired of seeing them chained up against every tree and littering your streets with riots and pickit signs.
Althought they were not the most hygenic people nor were they sober all the time, they had the right state of mind. Maybe it was all that marujana, but their mentalitly was "increase the peace","silence the violece", and "saving mother Earth". If so, then hell, I wouldn't mind being high all the time. It wasn't really just their state of mind however, but their actions, that really caused controversy. I mean many risked their lives to save what they loved or believed in. Most of them were the kind of sensitive people that believed in animals rights and things like recycyling.
Now a days, it is rejected by society to be so "eco friendly". People waste and throw away things that could either be donated or recycled and reused. People don't mind that our endangered animals are being stripped out of their natural eviorment in the rainforest  in order fo us to construct factories and malls. Now a days, when we see signs like" no littering on the grass", we just simplily litter on the sidewalk even thought an empty trash can is sitting ten feet away.
I can't exactly admit that I am the "greenest" person on the planet, sometimes I don't pick up trash on the floor, I leave my computer and lights on, and I sometimes throw my soda cans in the trash instead of recycle, but I can definitely tell I'm changing. I really dislike when I see people who just don't care and act as thought they will have no consequences when they act without thinking. Your fucking children are going to be living on this Earth one day, do you really want them to suffer from asthema or living in trash dump nieghborhood one day?! Even after people or signs clearly state that you should pick up after your trash, and having bins at every corner, people still continue to give that " I don't give a fuck" mentailty. I mean, I have those days too, but really, that's just being an ass. I have no idea how this post got from being hipis to trash, but whatevers clever. I used way too many "Quotations" in this post.

  1. Is there an equivalent counterculture going on now to what the hippies were about? I don't know, but their eco-friendliness is not all that seems to be coming back into the mainstream. Just found an article about recent breakthroughs in research about psychadelic drugs...some of which might end up getting FDA approval as legal drugs one day...Unfortunately it's not letting me copy the link into this comment box. Let me know and I'll e-mail it to you if you're curious.
