Animals, we are all one. As Americans, we all are all under the law to treat each other with fairness and equality. Why should animals be treated, no less, but in conditions that make living a struggle for survival ? With Darwin's theory on survival of the fittest, there are many variables like domesticated animals used for food. The living conditions are less than tolerable. For example, the popular sport of seal clubbing in the north pole and what about the whale hunting in japan ?
A couple of summers ago, I found out that some kids in the neighborhood found a cat and had a plan to kill it. My first thought screamed in my head and told me it was wrong, I needed to stop it. We were all sort of young, so they had a bet that who ever killed it pretty much got bragging rights. Just thinking back to how ignorant they were, it's weird how my expectations changed for them and I don't respect them nearly as much as I did before. I voiced my opinion and it was not a popular one, with that one thought, idea, disagreement, the sides split into two groups. The one that supported the killing and the one I influenced by acting on my thoughts to save this feline that could very well be someone's pet.
Many of my "friends" became enemies and even though we weren't kids anymore, we all were very immature about it. Arguing and yelling, settled nothing. I lost a of friends because of it but I didn't want anyone to be friends with people who thought killing for fun was OK. In the end, our efforts were rewarded and we told some adults about the lost cat and it found it's owner again, safe and sound.
Animal cruelty is intolerable in my book. My heart goes out to animal OR person who is suffering from animal cruelty, abuse, malnutrition, without a home. shelter, or just being neglected. I believe everyone under the consitution, including anmials should be treat equally and fairly so we all can have a chance to have a pursuit of happiness in our lives.
This post is quite fascinating. You start with some really big philosophical questions (my favorite kind) and then zoom in on one experience you had that "road-tested" those philosophies in the real world. It's great essay structure.
ReplyDeleteI think what I'm left wondering is, what are some more direct connections between what you're asking about in the beginning and the story of the cat? For example, how does Darwin's idea relate to the cat?
